Hi-dee ho! Jay from MLCotW, here.
Since I’ve been a major flake when it comes to guest posting for Amy, I thought I’d try to make up for it a little by posting two things that she seems to like in one post: meme’s & music.
I was perusing the MLCotW archives & found this little game from many a year ago. The object is simple: I give you song lyrics & you (before you go & Google them, preferably) give me the song title & artist.
Simple, no?
Extra points if you can name the record it originally came from – greatest hits collections don’t count unless the song was released for the first time on that particular record.
Shameless Plug Alert: You’ll have to stop by MLCotW next week to get the answers. See? I warned you it was shameless.
Alrighty, then - here we go. These are all songs from the 80’s. Some, you’ll probably recognize right off the bat; others, you may have to think about. They cover a variety of genres.
1. Is it wrong not to always be glad?/No it’s not wrong, but I must add/How can someone so young sing words so sad?
2. The king called out his jet fighters/He said “You better earn your pay/Drop your bombs between the minarets/down the Casbah way”
3. I’m hanging on/You’re all that’s left to hold on to/I’m still waiting
4. I got wasted, she got mad/Called me names, then she called her dad/He got crazy & I did too/Wondered what I did to you
5. Get me to the airport/get me on a plane/Hurry, hurry, hurry/before I go insane
6. I count the falling tears/that fall before my eyes/Seems like a thousand years/since we broke the ties
7. She was pretty as a picture/She was sharper than a photograph/She was everything I needed/with her smile & the way she laughed
8. But it’s superficial & it’s only skin deep/Because the voices in your head keep shouting in your sleep/”Get back!”
9. You don’t have to watch “Dynasty”/to have an attitude/You just leave it all up to me/My love will be your food
10. I’m in love/At least every minute or two/Until the next little girl walks by/I think I love her, too
11. She’s dressed in yellow/She says “Hello,/come sit next to me, you fine fellow”
12. Some friends of mine just the other night/went to hear this cool cat blow/they said he sang so good that the roof fell in/& they didn’t even stop the show
13. The hero is exposed when/his crimes are brought to the light of day/Won’t be feeling sorry, sorry, sorry on the judgment day
14. Out all night/time to get started/Saving all week/for a bang boom party
15. I had to wait forever/But better late than never
16. Got the bubbleheaded bleach blonde/comes on at 5/She can tell you about the plane crash/with a gleam in her eye
17. Chapter 1, I didn’t really get too far/Chapter 2, that’s when I fell in love with you/You said you’d stand by me in the middle of Chapter 3/But you were up to your old tricks in Chapters 4, 5 & 6
18. I told you/that we could fly/’cause we all have wings/But some of us don’t know why
19. Had a few beers, getting high/Sitting, watching the crowd go by, uh huh/It ain’t no big thing
20. Blinded by passion/ you foolishly let someone in/All the warnings went off in your head,/still you had to give in

Since I graduated in 1986, I thought I’d do well at this. I was soooo wrong! I know #9 is “Kiss” by Prince, and #16 is “Dirty Laundry”, but I’m not sure who it is by. A couple of others sounded a little familiar (maybe #11, #12, and #17), but I’d never be able to come up with them. I’m betting my brother, Billy Rhythm, will know almost all of them. Let’s hope he can carry the family on this one. (Maybe I’d do better with country lyrics???)

I guess I’m not too good at this, though, Leese. #2 and #9 we got already. #11 is “Bust A Move” by Young MC. (The big band arrangement of same song by Richard Cheese is quite funny.) #16 you got–I do believe Janet is in error. #18 is INXS–you didn’t get it? “Never Tear Us Apart.” I think Lita Ford did #19. Ooh, I got #6 too. Isn’t that Cinderella? Is that “Nobody’s Fool?”I think that’s all I can get.
