All Kinds of NASCAR Tidbits Including Pictures and A Question.

Posted by Amy in General | NASCAR

Since I got all philosophical, sentimental, or whatever you would call that with the Texas Race Report –I left out the “Notes” section where I usually go into all things NASCAR that didn’t fit nice and tidy in the race post. So I present to you- NASCAR tidbits in no particular order that have been floating around in my brain:

+ Wow there were a lot of NASCAR penalties handed down this week!  Ron Hornaday was penalized for an on track incident in the Craftsman Truck Series he was fined $25,000 and 25 points.  Martin Truex Jr.’s 56 car was penalized for being too low in the post race inspection and was docked 6 points, $25,000 fine for the crew chief as well as probation for his crew chief. That stinks because he has been ON A ROLL lately and I honestly felt his frustration in his post race interview after Texas.  Michael Waltrip Racing stated they do not plan to appeal.  And the two BIG penalties come to teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano of Penske Racing for unapproved suspension items.  The crew chief for each car has been suspended for 6 races and fined $100,000 EACH plus 25 championship and owner points EACH car.  Harsh- obviously NASCAR is sending a message: Do not mess with the Gen 6 car too much- or you’ll get the horn!

+Speaking of Brad Keselowski- he was NOT penalized for his comments  (you can read his comments here) for basically stating that they were targeted by NASCAR, yet Denny Hamlin was fined for saying that the Gen 6 car didn’t race as well as he had expected? Wow really? I was surprised when Denny got fined for his comments…really surprised.  And now I am surprised that Brad DIDN’T get fined for his.  It’s a wonder any driver would say anything for fear of penalty if it’s not clear what you will get fined for and what you won’t.

+Back to Martin Truex Jr for a second. Apparently my father has become a big Martin fan- which is fine (because I have always suspected his Tony Stewart fandom was fair weather anyway). But my father proceeded to argue with me for the last 30 laps of the race at Texas that Martin drove a Chevrolet.  I KNOW MY CHEVY DRIVERS man- do not argue with me!  So then during Martin’s post race interview he was wearing a hat that had a big Toyota logo emblazoned across it…so I nonchalantly said “Wow- that’s a big BOWTIE on Martin’s hat right there isn’t it.” Muahhaha! Do not question me when it comes to which drivers are in Chevrolets.

+Have you heard that there will be NO pit crew challenge this year in conjunction with the All-Star Race? They were unable to get a sponsor for the pit crew challenge so they aren’t having one.  I am SO BUMMED out about that!  I LOVE watching the pit crew challenge- LOVE LOVE LOVE it because I think that it really show cases what they contribute and how NASCAR a TEAM sport! Sigh…if any of the pit crews would like to come to my house- I would gladly time them while they make pit stops on my car. I have always wanted my own personal pit crew and this would let me get an up close look at a pit stop so it really is win win! ;-)

+In the Mobil 1 Under The Hood Sweepstakes it is down to Tony Stewart’s Bel Air and his Pontiac GTO (I KNEW the Nomad wouldn’t win- it’s such an under appreciated classic).  As I mentioned awhile back I was CERTAIN that the Bel Air would win the whole enchilada as far as the fan vote…but I am being proven WRONG- the GTO is in a commanding lead as of this morning.  Do you think if I won the prize that they would let me at least LOOK at Tony’s Nomad after I was done handing him paper towels and oil filters while he changed the oil and I “helped”? Not that I will win because I am pretty sure I won’t but…then again you never know- weirder things have happened to me.

+I was going through some pictures Misty took at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Kobalt 400 and it brought up a question for me: Why do drivers lick/suck their ear pieces before putting them in?  Misty has a photo series of Jimmie Johnson doing this before one of the practices.  It’s not just a Jimmie Johnson thing though- I have seen MANY drivers do this (surprisingly enough though- I haven’t seen Tony do it- with as much time as I tend to spend in Vegas watching his pit crew you would think I have- but no- however it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he does it too).  I figure that these ear pieces are how they hear their radio so I would think that licking them would be bad for them.  So anyone know why they do it?

+ Speaking of Misty’s pictures from Las Vegas I am going share with you my favorite photographs by Misty:

A cool picture of Greg Biffle’s Red Cross Paint Scheme in the garage area in Las Vegas…

Jeff Gordon’s crew collects data during the race weekend. That’s an interesting way to hold a laptop- and he held it that way for a long time.  I was impressed.

How Does He Not Drop That Laptop?

I mentioned in my post about our time in Vegas for the race that Tony was GRUMPY.  Apparently I missed this big smile that Misty caught right before his media availability started in the media center. I was probably fiddling with the settings on my camera or something. Damnation. Anyway I didn’t want to give false impressions that he was more grumpy than he apparently was:

And perhaps my favorite of all of hers- this is a Tony Stewart crew member waiting between runs during Saturday’s practice.  We jokingly said to each other that he was probably praying that the car was good so that Tony wouldn’t be grumpy anymore- but seriously this is just a cool picture.

Oh PLEASE let the car be good...

Well that’s it for this post- Stay Tuned on Saturday though- BG has a special post we will be sharing!

Oh okay here is a Gratuitous Tony Stewart picture because you know you want it. This one was from Auto Club Speedway- I missed it because I had my own pictures since I was at the race but this one cracks me up and I would LOVE to know what was going on here:
