It seems that whenever I pick Tony Stewart as my lead in my Fantasy League- he has a terrible day. So I can be assuring you all that I will not be picking him as my lead driver anymore. Sigh. I was so optimistic that Tony would have a good run at Martinsville.  He was running the Code 3 Associates paint scheme and the last time he ran that- he won the race (Pocono). Plus he qualified 7th! Whoo! That was awesome.

I am not sure if it was the fact that it rained all day on Saturday and the track was green, if it was the fact that the weather at Martinsville was different or that it seemed to change throughout the day from cold and windy at times to other times almost sunny.  Whatever the reason the car seemed to handle like a boat anchor and it seemed that Tony often struggled with the handling of the car.  Judging by what he was saying on the radio it was too tight in the center and that just got worse as the race wore on. At one point the leader (I don’t remember which one- the race leader seemed to swap back and forth quite a bit) even put Tony a lap down- but luckily not too soon after there was a caution and he happened to be the Lucky Dog and was able to get back on the lead lap.  There was also a pit road speeding penalty thrown in there somewhere in the middle (i didn’t know down the exact lap) for good measure. Thus Tony seemed stymied in the rear of the lead lap contingent most of the race.

They did seem to hit on something late in the race and he was able to make up some spots and for awhile it looked like he might be able to muscle out a top 15 finish- but it was not to be. Tony finished the race 17th but actually went up two positions in the standings and is now 15th in the championship standings but win no wins under his belt.  However it was a good day for Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kurt Busch, who overcame accidental contact on pit road with Brad Keselowski and subsequent on-track skirmish with Brad to win the race!  Busch was the sixth different winner in six races.

Notes About Martinsville:

1. I love Tony’s Code 3 Associates Firesuit- I think it’s the blue and yellow together:

2. Speaking of Code 3 Associates- Have you joined them (it’s FREE- although you can also donate if you want) yet? Help Tony and Code 3 Associates rescue animals in peril during natural disasters by joining here!

3. It seems that drivers at Martinsville were more agro this year than at Bristol- and there is nothing that fans love more than a little bit of rivalry! Who’s side were you on Team Brad or Team Kurt? I have to say Brad- I think that Kurt hit into you accidentally but thanks for flipping him off for a lap and hitting into him. Oh and for the feisty interview while you were still in the garage- that made for some good TV right there :-) .

4. Also here is a GREAT article from Kelly Crandall with Popular Speed about how Kurt Busch’s win at Martinsville was an emotional family affair!

Next Race is Texas Motor Speedway!
