I know I have said this before- but I love the excitement of racing at Bristol. It and Martinsville are both my favorite tracks to watch on TV (I have not yet made it to either track – but I will one day). But racing at Bristol at night- man there is just something about the lights that adds to the excitement and makes the tension and the vibe at the track almost palpable even through the medium of television.  This Bristol race was no different with plenty of dust-ups, disappointed drivers and of course that racing and that FINISH!  Go ahead and admit it- a tiny little part of you wanted Kasey Kahne to bump-and-run Matt Kenseth…just a little bit right? I certainly did.  I really don’t think anyone would blame him after the issue Kasey has had with the JGR drivers- Matt in particular.  My question to you is this: If Kasey had bumped Kenseth out of the way to take the checkers would that have changed your opinion of Kasey for the better, for the worse, or not at all? Feel free to leave your answer in the comments- I am just curious what your thoughts on this are. (more…)

I interrupt your regularly scheduled race report post (It will post tomorrow afternoon I promise) to get on my soapbox and rant a little. I rarely do this-but sometimes I just have to- even when (or usually because) I know that my opinions are not with the norm.- Amy

I was checking my personal email at work this morning and when I say work I mean the job by which I am a salaried 8-5, M-F employee- NOT this blog which is neither work nor does it make me any money just so we are completely clear on that little point.   Anyway- I was quickly wading through a sea of junk mail and press releases on my phone when I saw that there was a Stewart-Haas Racing Press conference scheduled for 2:00 PM (ET) tomorrow (August 27th, 2013) to “to announce future expansion of Stewart-Haas Racing.”  In layman’s terms I am sure this means that they are announcing the addition of a fourth driver to the Stewart-Haas Racing stable – that being Kurt Busch. Then a little later in the day (at lunch) I checked my social media sites as well as some of my favorite Tony Stewart/Stewart-Haas Racing message boards and they were all abuzz with the news of Kurt Busch going to Stewart-Haas racing in 2014. Plus there was the little push notification from NASCAR MOBILE 13 announcing it. (more…)

I thought we all needed some much needed Gratuitous Tony Stewart pictures don’t you?  I don’t remember when I started adding the “gratuitous Tony Stewart pictures” to my race posts – it seems like I have been doing it for a long time.  I obviously have not run into any Tony pictures gratuitous or otherwise for my posts since his injury. Anyway, I was looking through my Flickr account for a specific (non-race related) picture the other night when I caught sight of this picture Misty took from Champions week last year. We usually stand at the corner by the Fashion Show mall to get pictures of the actual burn outs but last year we decided to do something a little different and took full advantage of our media access to stand in the little roped off area in front of the Victory Lap stage for media. Misty was taking pictures of each driver as they were introduced on the stage- and this picture is obviously a picture of a somewhat pensive Kasey Kahne…but it’s Tony’s expression behind Kasey that CRACKS ME UP. I don’t know why it humors me so- I guess it’s because it’s like he’s slightly amused by us.  He had probably seen us earlier at the Chevy Gen6 car reveal – as not only did we sit in the first row, but then when media were invited onstage I drug Misty up there because I wanted to get some pictures of the car. Basically Tony photo-bombed this picture of Kasey without meaning to.

Dad was a purist. His interest began and ended with formula cars. Me, I was more like my racing hero, Jim Clark. He was a double Formula One champion, but he’d driven everything- sports cars, saloon cars, NASCAR and even rally cars. While my dream was to reach Formula One, I’d drive anything.” Hot Seat by Simon Wood.

I was introduced to Simon Wood’s books by association. I posted reviews for Tammy Kaehler’s Kate Reilly Racing books earlier this year (Dead Man’s Switch and Braking Points).  Tammy also blogs about motorsports over at Two For The Road- a blog she shares with Simon Wood (who is a former race car driver) and it was reading this blog that made me look up Simon’s books (he has quite a few books- but so far there are just the two in the Aidy Westlake Mystery series- which are racing related so that was logically where I started).

I know several people who ride motorcycles. It’s popular here because our local race track, LAGUNA SECA holds several major bike races, plus a neighboring town hosts a 4th of July bike rally.  During these peak times our local roads and highways are inundated with motorcycles of every type and riders of every skill level. I am not surprised that a Ford won at Michigan- it seems that a Ford almost ALWAYS wins at Michigan- before Logano the previous winner of the last two races at Michigan was Ford driver Greg Biffle- see what I mean.

What I am surprised with about the Michigan race? Austin Dillon’s performance in the 14 car!  I know I know- I am biased, BUT I wasn’t sure about Austin Dillon as a choice to run MI.  After all he has little cup car experience.  When Stewart-Haas Racing tweeted out the picture of the yellow rookie stripe on the back of the 14 car I cringed and thought to myself quietly- “this could get ugly” and I fretted a bit.  But then I started seeing practice times. They weren’t that bad all things considered, so I had a little hope.  But then I saw qualifying and was all “eh…that wasn’t so great. Damn rookie.” Yeah I said it…deal with it. Then I saw the results of final practice and was duly impressed. Hmm maybe I misjudged Austin Dillon’s chances (and talents) after all. (more…)

I have been holding back on the review for The Afterlife of Emerson Tang by Paula Champa so that I could purposely publish it this week.  Why? Because it’s Car Week here on the Monterey Peninsula which culminates with our world famous Concours d’Elegance and part of this book actually takes place at Concours. So it’s kind of a local car thing  that is kind of relevant to me and relevant to the blog because it’s about the love of a car- (but that is FAR too simple of a way to describe this book- which I will get to in a minute). This book is NOT NASCAR related- nor is it really even race related- but it is about the love of a very special car and has local tie ins so I had to review it for you. (more…)
