Was it just me or was that race at Dover about 150 laps too long? Maybe it was just me because when my driver doesn’t do so well I get grumpy about it and the Dover race wasn’t the best for the Tony and the 14 team. I remember hearing Tony say that Dover was one of the chase tracks that they were concerned with- so I wasn’t surprised to see the team struggle with handling issues. I do NOT like it when my driver finishes a lap down…and it makes me uber cranky when he finishes more than a lap down. The car was ill handling the entire weekend as obvious by Tony’s practice speeds, qualifying effort and race. I wasn’t listening to the radio so I don’t know the exacts of HOW the handling was but but I honestly don’t think it matters much. They were bad. They know they were bad. According to the team report for Dover, Darian says that they have been routinely bad at concrete tracks:

“The biggest thing is just that we don’t have the concrete tracks figured out yet. It’s obvious. At Bristol and Dover, we’ve just struggled for three years now with Tony there. We just need to figure out what we need to do. It’s not because of a lack of effort. We’re going to keep trying to find a few things and keep fighting.” Darian Grubb, Crew Chief of the #14 Chevy Impala.

Also from the team report, I don’t understand the technical aspects of what Tony means when he says “even when we got the balance halfway decent we didn’t have speed.” Now shouldn’t the car have speed? It’s too technical for me to wrap my beady little brain around I guess. I do take some solace in the face that Newman seemed to be struggling too. I guess that they were equally crummy across the board leads me to think that it IS a technical issue that will be ironed out and hopefully soon. So the race really is NO fun to watch when you driver is struggling ALL race long just to attempt to be competitive.

To make this post a tad more cheery I would like to share with you a series of photos from photographer Glenn Bure who kindly shoots a couple of the NorthEast races and then kindly sends me his Tony pictures. I love this series by Glenn because they show off Tony’s helmet. Tony must have quite a few helmets and it seems to me that they all have different designs. I know he ran a cool patriotic design to go with his Richmond car- but I don’t know exactly how many helmets he has. I get frustrated because sometimes I want to see what his helmet looks like but never get to see it. Glenn was able to get some shots of this one that I hadn’t seen before:

Tony Stewart futzes with his helmet pre-race at Dover. (Photo Credit: Glenn Bure for BadGroove)

Now the pink on the helmet is all reflection (I think) from the number on the roof of the car- which I will get to later. Here is a little different view of Tony and his helmet:

Tony and his helmet- pre-race at Dover. (photo credit: Glenn Bure for Badgroove)

Again I think the pink (except for the pink ribbon on the shield) is reflection from the number on the roof of his car. Because the car was all pink-ified for breast cancer awareness month:

Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, drives on track during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. (Photo Credit: Todd Warshaw/Getty Images North America)

Most of the Chevy drivers (not all- I didn’t see any pink on Jimmie Johnson’s car -but I did see that his crew chief was wearing a pink hat) had pink on their cars because October is breast cancer awareness month. It was a little odd. However then I watched some football that afternoon- more pink in the football and then in the late evening I watched some bull riding and even the cowboys were either wearing pink shirts or had a pink bandana tied somewhere on their person (one guy was even wearing his like a pink cape). But I totally digress.

Back to racing and Tony Stewart! Even though they had a bad run at Dover I still have faith that Tony Stewart and the whole #14 team can pull of a championship…they need to just #KeepDigging. Tony is currently tied for third in the points standings with Dover winner Kurt Busch and are only 9 points out of the lead. Current chase leader is Kevin Harvick.

Notes:

Remember to enter the Office Depot 14for14 contest on the Office Depot Racing website this month the prize is the poster of Tony and the team and is autographed by Tony and team. While you are there at the Office Depot Racing website, don’t forget to get the coupon to take to the Office Depot print center to get your NOVEMBER poster. Does anyone have them all? I am missing June….and I am sad about it cuz I loved June- it was one of my favorite months.

Oh and here is another picture of Tony from Glenn:

I can't decide if he's thinking or if he's confused...but it's a silly face all the same.

Okay- seriously it was all I could do not to use WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER as the title of this post. Now that it’s out of my system (kind of) I can move on with the post.

Monday morning, while I was getting ready for work, I nearly forgot to put on my pink checker flag socks. I wear them every race day. I was up earlier than normal after a fairly crappy night of (lack of) sleep and more worried about getting my car to its service appointment by 7:30 and wasn’t thinking about it being race day. Thus, I nearly forgot to wear my socks. Fear not- I remembered at the last minute that I was about to put on the wrong socks and grabbed the right pair. Then as I was slipping them on I thought to myself- I should snap a picture of my checker flag socks and post them on my blog…but then common sense took over and I decided no one would want to see my socks. So consider yourself lucky that you aren’t looking at a pink sock emblazoned with checkered flags encasing my foot right now. You are welcome.

Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, celebrates with the checkered flag after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway on September 19, 2011 in Joliet, Illinois.

On Sunday, I was woeful that the race was rained out. I mentioned that fact on Sunday. I was looking forward to some racing action. Since I didn’t want to take a chance of missing the race on Monday like I did during the last rain delayed race, I decided to set up the laptop to be on the T1 and try NASCAR.COM’s Race Buddy on that because I knew it would be too much to expect my work desktop to handle Race Buddy and all my work related applications that I need open. I was quite impressed with Race Buddy. It was pretty easy to figure out and there were no commercials. I am guessing Tony was one of their featured drivers because he was the in-race reporter? Either way- I basically turned on Tony’s in-car camera view and just stuck with that from before the start of the race until victory lane. All I can say is I am a Race Buddy fan now.

So watching the race only through Tony’s in-car cameras and listening only to his race audio was an interesting experience. I watched people mill around the car before the race through the in-car cameras, I watched invocation through the in-car camera, I even watched Tony buckle himself into his car- which is quite the rigamarole let me tell you. I have actually watched him strap into his car before during practice at Vegas once but from the upper fan deck…from the in-car it was a whole new experience.

During the race I was working and watching so I would take little snippet of notes and these snippets themselves are humorous because why I wrote them down is mostly long gone now. For instance I felt the need to write down “Lap 87- Darian Grubb -Awesome Job Buddy – P9 Keep Digging” which I think is pretty much a direct quote from Darian. Apparently at some point I felt the need to write ““Clear-Clear High” is soothing.” I have other funny little comments like “Possibly two tires or fuel only…two tires haul ass haul ass”- with that one I am not sure if Darian said “Haul Ass Haul Ass” during the pit stop or if that was my own commentary. I am completely sure that during that last pit stop when Darian called Tony in for fuel only- my note says “Fuel only- Get it full Get it full Get it full” that those are my thoughts there- not me parroting Darian.

My notes from the race (Photo Credit: me)

My favorite radio communication of the whole race though? Came right after Tony crossed the finish line as the winner. There was the usual celebratory chatter between Tony and Darian when Bob (The Spotter) comes on and says “SAVE FUEL FOR THE BURNOUT” – Tony just chuckled and said something the effect that he didn’t think he’d have enough anyway (and he didn’t).

(Caption for photo below: And right over at the entry to pit road Ryan is where I ran out of gas.”)

By the way, I think the Geico 400 trophy is awesome- but does it come with a toasted english muffin with butter and jam?:

Notes About Chicago:

Tony is not only second in the points standings, but retains his streak of winning at least once every season. Shwew for not seeing that streak end.

While sitting at work and listening to Tony (and crew’s) race radio I had two OH SHIT moments…the first one was when Bob (The Spotter) said “You gotta right front flat right here!” Apparently I wasn’t the only one because a few seconds later Darian came on the radio and said “You scared the crap out of of me- I thought you were talking about us!” Obviously I did too. Bob was just taking about a car that was slow on the apron in front of Tony. The second one came when Tony, who was leading, was pacing himself to save gas and Darian was feeding him interval times between him and second place. Darian said “two FLAT” and I panicked for a second thinking we had two flat tires. I was like WTH! But apparently there was no need to panic after all.

In case you missed my post last week about the Office Depot Foundation sackpack donation Tony assisted with here is a link- it’s worth it just to see the “Tony Stewart The Driver meets Tony Stewart The Cat” picture if nothing else (it’s the last picture in the post).

Also in case you missed it is a great NASCAR.COM article on Tony’s jackman Mike Casto.

So I recommend Race Buddy. However, I forgot to mention that a couple weeks ago we SIRIUS/XM users who don’t pay extra for the NASCAR channel (90) got a whole weekend of it for free. While if I had the station I would probably listen to it…I didn’t think it was worth paying extra for. There were commercials (on most of the music stations I listen to there are no commercials) first off – so why would I pay extra for commercials? Secondly- I only have SiriusXM in my car- so to catch anything substantial I would have to drive around to listen. Not to mention that Talk Radio is just not my bag…I prefer something I can <del>screech</del> sing along to.

Was I the only one who had a craving for Mexican food after the race? Apparently not:

Tony and Darian pose in sombreros in victory lane. I can only assume for sponsor El Monterey? Ariba! (Blatently stolen from twitter).

Next Race: Louden, NH. Oh and #KeepDiggingTony

You would have thought the results of the Indy 500 on Memorial Day weekend would have taught me something. To help with getting my post-race posting out in a timely manner I had written the bulk of my first paragraph for the Brickyard 400 before the caution flag for the wreck that changed everything. The problem in doing that, I learned, is that the whole mood of the race can change in an instant- thus rendering the article I started irrelevant. My pre-caution paragraph was wrought with disappointing statements like “It’s always disheartening to me when Tony has a bad run but it’s especially disparaging when it’s at his home track of Indianapolis Motor Speedway” or better yet my favorite “The momentum from Tony’s first WoO win earlier this week was not enough to carry him through the Brickyard 400 weekend.” See those statements were definitely not written by Miss Sunshine that is for certain.

(ed.- I love this picture...LOVE it) AN INFRARED CAMERA WAS USED TO CREATE THIS IMAGE) Tony Stewart drives the #14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet to the garage during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 30, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo Credit: Chris Graythen/Getty Images North America)

It wasn’t the best run to be completely honest and that started with practice. I don’t usually put much credence in practice numbers- but Tony’s numbers weren’t that great. Then couple that with the fact that he ended up qualifying 24th and I was not left with any warm and fuzzies- especially considering that teammate Ryan Newman only bested our qualifying effort by one place. That tells me that both cars in the SHR stable were equally bad.

The race seemed like a scene right out of Days of Thunder. You know the one when the well seasoned crew chief tells the overly cocky yet rookie NASCAR driver that he may as well go out there and hit the pace car because it’s the only left out there he hasn’t hit. Unfortunately to me- it seemed that Tony was living that little portion of Days of Thunder during the Brickyard. It started with him hitting the commitment cone during one of the first rounds of pitstops. It was done to avoid running into Harvick who had slowed quickly in front of him and kinda squeezed him out in the process. What a fluke! How often do people hit the dang commitment cone. Because Stewart then had to serve a penalty for the violation- he was put way down in 33rd position. A bit later in the race, Tony hit the wall pretty hard- scraping up the side of the #14 Mobil 1/Office Depot chevy but good. Insert sigh here. Then even further into the race he had a pit road collision with Kyle Busch. After the collision Tony stated that the car felt like the tow was knocked out of alignment. Insert another sigh- even bigger than the first. It was right around then I started to write my paragraph. I was having major Days of Thunder flashback…so much that I tweeted that someone should get Darian Grubb an ice cream cone (because that part where Robert Duvall tells Tom Cruise that he’s busy eating an ice cream is my FAVORITE part of the movie). Not only did I start writing my paragraph but then I started trying to do math and figure out if there were any way possible that Tony could finish in the 20′s somewhere and NOT lose points standings positions. It didn’t work out in any of my senarious.

Tony Stewart drives the #14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 29, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo Credit: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images North America)

Then poof- there was the accident that changed everything and it turned into a strategy race. And while their strategy and pit calls didn’t get them a win- Tony ended up pulling off a 6th place position. Talk about a come back- anything that could go wrong seemingly did go wrong and they still battled back to a 6th place position. That? That is an awesome day. It would only be more awesome if that day had turned into a winning day. The 14 team’s hard wrought 6th place finish propelled them to 9th place in the points standings (YEY – We are back in the top 10…but just barely).

Race winner was Paul Menard, who staved off a charging Jeff Gordon to take his first checkers of the year.

Notes About The Brickyard:

Did you see the awesome pre-race piece about Kyle Busch by Marty Smith? It was GREAT- you can see the video and read more here.

Another great piece is the piece Jerry Wilson did about Paul Menard…check it out.

I still can’t believe that Tony ended up with a commitment cone violation….ARG! I mean we RARELY even see commitment cone violations…but that is the kind of season Tony Stewart has been having this year it seems. As a matter of fact? It leaves me with no more words…so I leave you with this parting shot:

Wow, what a weekend for Stewart-Haas Racing. I admit I was quite pleased when Ryan and Tony qualified 1-2 (although that little teeny competitive person inside me was chagrined that it wasn’t the other way around). Tony isn’t always the best qualifier- so when he qualifies top 10 I get pretty happy. When he qualifies top 5 I get damn happy. When he qualifies top 2? I do a jig. Ok not really- but I was ecstatic and hopeful for his run on Sunday.

Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, poses with his team and Ryan Newman, driver of the #39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, and his team on the grid prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 in Loudon, New Hampshire. (Photo Credit: Chris Trotman/Getty Images North America)

It appears I had every reason to be hopeful. EVERY REASON. I settled in for the race with my cell phone and my note pad close. I started off on the TNT national broadcast- only for the pre-race. Once the command was given to start engines I switched it over to Stewart’s DirecTV HotPass channel where for the second week in a row I just stayed on the HotPass Channel. I have decided that I like the HotPass because I get the radio communications between Tony, Darian and Bob without draining my battery on my phone and having to relaunch the Sprint ap every time I go to read a text or a tweet- which during the race is quite often.

Anyway- it was quite obvious by the way Tony Stewart moved through the field that he had a car to be reckoned with. Especially if you consider that during the pre-race show all the drivers interviewed mentioned how hard it would be to pass at Louden. I don’t remember anyone saying anything different. Tony seemed to be able to work his way up through the field a couple times and made it look easy. EASY! Whoo.

Ryan Newman (R), driver of the #39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, is congratulated by team owner and second place finisher, Tony Stewart (L), driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, in Victory Lane after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 in Loudon, New Hampshire. (Photo Credit: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images North America)

I will readily admit that the competitive side of me came out when Tony was running hard trying to catch Ryan. I was standing there in front of the TV-hoping Ryan would run out of gas. I know, I should hang my head in shame a little for hoping Ryan would run out of gas, after all that is Tony’s teammate. All I can say is that, Tony is my driver and he could be racing my mom out there and I would still be rooting for Tony. It’s just how this fan/driver relationship works.

Tony’s second place finish has moved him into a tie for 10th place with Denny Hamlin. I can only hope that this 1-2 weekend at New Hampshire signals the start of better luck for Tony Stewart and Stewart-Haas Racing.

Ryan Newman, driver of the #39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, is congratulated by teammate Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, after Newman won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 in Loudon, New Hampshire.
Notes on Loudon:

You see that picture up there of Tony congratulating Ryan in the car. The one right above this notes section? You might have to look carefully because it’s small but Tony’s hand is out congratulating Ryan. I LOVE that picture. Why? Well, as I mentioned I was watching the race on Tony’s HotPass channel and seeing him celebrate Ryan’s win and his second place from his incar camera was GREAT! He was UBER excited!!! Then hearing that one of the first things Tony said when he got out of his car was that he was “so damn proud” that he “couldn’t see straight” made me laugh.

I love listening in on the radio communication. How else would I have known that Tony was mad because the hose that cools his feet wasn’t hooked up and I found that out because he stated over his radio that he in charge of hooking up said hose could drive the car the next time the hose didn’t get hooked up. So Tony wasn’t hot-headed he was hot-footed. Ha! I crack myself up. Not to mention the kind words he had to say about Andy Lally. LOVE it because that is what is going on right then and there in the car in my driver’s head.

Oh and I am hearing that there is a rumor out there that Carl Edwards may be signing with JGR for next season…I am not sure if JGR is going to a 4 car team or if that means someone is out of one of the JGR cars. I guess we will find out soon enough.

I still have to say that I would be happier if Ryan and Tony’s finishes were reversed, but still pretty damn happy.

But we really need a win now. Just saying.

Oh and before I forget- Tony mentioned during his post-race press conference that Darian was dealing with pneumonia while on the pit box…I sure hope he’s feeling better soon!

Gratuitous Tony picture:

Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, stands on the grid during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 15, 2011 in Loudon, New Hampshire.
Don’t forget next weekend is an off weekend for the Cup cars…they will be back the following weekend at Indy. Go Tony Go!

And I thought Richmond was a long race. Seriously- Darlington was LONG- and I have to say that I agree with Tony’s comment on Race Day- Darlington should be shortened. I understand the history behind Darlington and The Southern 500- but really? I can’t imagine what it was like for those on the east coast!

My favorite part of the Mother’s Day weekend race is ALWAYS the command to start engines because it is given by a bunch of the driver’s moms! I LOVE that part.

Tony Stewart and his mom, Pam Boas, at driver introductions for the Southern 500 at Darlington (photo Credit: CIA Stock Photography, Inc.- borrowed from Tony Stewart facebook page)

I tried to find a picture of the mothers all lined up for the command- but darned if I could find one from this year (I did find one from last year’s race though).

So can we talk about how AWESOME Tony’s run was at the beginning of the race? He seemed extremely happy with the balance on the car. After starting the race 9th, he quickly moved up into the top five and ran mostly in the top three for much of the race. It was so encouraging- that despite two pit stop problems (one nearly missed pit box and one problem with one of the tires) they remained in the top ten through out much of the race. Then it happened- Darian called Tony in for a green flag pit stop- which went flawless. And then as soon as Tony was back out on the track the yellow flag waved for debris from Mark Martin blowing a tire and instantly Tony was a lap down.

Tony Stewart pits the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series SHOWTIME Southern 500 in Darlington, South Carolina. (Photo Credit: Tom Pennington/Getty Images North America)

Since he had just pitted Tony was able to take the wave around and went from being a lap down to THE LAST CAR on the lead lap- 20th with only 80 something laps left. Did you hear someone cursing a blue streak? Well that was me (and probably a throng of other Stewart fans joining in).

However, a little luck and determination would bring the Office Depot/Mobil 1 team from that last car on the lead lap position up through the field . First just fighting his way through traffic Tony was pretty much stuck right around 17th position. However when a late race caution came out- Darian told Tony that they would do the OPPOSITE of what the majority of the cars in front of them would do. If they pitted- Tony was to stay out. If they stayed out Darian would call Tony into the pits. A majority of the cars came in for fresh tires. Tony stayed out. This brought him up to 3rd- but with old tires with 20 laps or so left. Tony fought hard to maintain his position but with all that fresh rubber behind him he eventually fell back. He ended up finishing 7th. He is 7th in the points.

Race winner was Regan Smith who fought off Carl Edwards for the win. Carl Edwards remains the series points leader.

Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, stands on the grid during qualifying in Darlington, South Carolina.
Notes About Darlington:

So at the very beginning of the race weekends all fans heard about was the Ryan Newman / Juan Pablo Montoya carry over from Richmond- with much speculation about what happened in the NASCAR trailer between the two (there were reports of a physical altercation between the drivers). Then at the end of the race there is the dust up between Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick. I think that mostly that was just “Boys Have At It” and honestly- I am fine with that. Should Kyle have thought twice before pushing Harvick’s car? Yes- he was putting people in danger because pushing the 29 car out of his way jump-started Harvick’s car caused it to careen into the pit wall where tons of personnel were working (not to mention the crew members and officials on foot making their way to the dust up). Do I think it’s something that Kyle should be penalized for? Probably not.

Too bad Darian doesn’t have a crystal ball…then he might be able to predict things. Seriously this year has been lousy for luck like that. I could tell Tony wasn’t thrilled about what had happened- but it was good that he didn’t take it out on Darian either.

Don’t forget to read Misty’s Mid Season Report Card on the new points system.

Next week is The Monster Mile- Dover on Sunday.

And don’t forget to enter the Office Depot Official Small Business of NASCAR contest over at OfficeDepotRacing.com:

So first we had our Tony Stewart interview (our third, Tony’s fifty billionth I am sure) on Thursday at the Office Depot Appearance in North Las Vegas. As always, Tony was extremely generous with his time and gave us some great answers to our strange mix of questions. You can read our Quick Chat with Tony Stewart here.

On Friday it was practice, qualifying, and riding around in a golf cart delivering Miller Lite with Brad Keselowski to unsuspecting fans in the campgrounds at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Yeah we still aren’t sure how it happened either, but we got to ride around in a six seater golf cart with a team of PR people and Brad delivering beer with a SpeedTV film crew following us (literally- they had their own golf cart). Misty did a great write up of her chat with Brad in the golf cart called All In In Vegas, All In In Racing. (What was I doing while Misty was sitting and chatting with brad in the golf cart? Why I was sitting facing out the back- 80s stationwagon style of the same golf cart thinking HOLY CRAP how did we luck into this event- because it was FUN).

Jeff Gordon watches as the crew makes adjustments after he spun in practice on Friday.
Saturday was more practice for the cup drivers and a nationwide race.

Sunday was the big race. The Kobolt Tools 400. You can read about my excitement and disappointment regarding the race in the Race 3: Las Vegas post.

And now…as a bonus for sticking with me this far? I am going to embed a video that I found while searching youtube. How I came across this I don’t remember but I think I was searching for Tony’s postrace press for Las Vegas. Any way…the first five seconds are pretty darn adorable…and if you haven’t seen the video before it’s funny:

Tony qualified for the race in Kansas 14th (which I think is funny since he drives the 14 car). He had a good strong run at Kansas and even got the 10 bonus points (5 for leading a lap and 5 for leading the most laps…YEY). Combine that with a strong finish of 4th. While Tony remains 10th in the points after the Kansas race due to several strong finishes by other chase contenders, Stewart’s strong showing at Kansas trimmed his points deficit on the leader from 165 points before the race to 127 after. While Greg Biffle was the race winner, Jimmie Johnson overtook Denny Hamlin for the points lead in the Cup standings.

Did you see Tony during the pre-race ceremonies holding Gavin Grubb (son of crew chief Darian Grubb)…that Gavin is ADORABLE!

NOTES ABOUT KANSAS:

I can only bet that winner of the OFFICIAL SMALL BUSINESS OF NASCAR (sponsored by the Office Depot) winner from last week at Dover, Mike Pagano of PaganoPhotography, wishes that Greg Biffle had won LAST weekend because that would have been a million dollar award to his small business. To quote my two and a half year old nephew, AWW MAN!
