Probably one of my “best” pictures I have personally taken of Tony- I tend to forget how to work my camera when in close proximity to the man. Silly Amy. (Photo Credit: Amy K. Marbach, Las Vegas Motor Speedway 2013)

Well it’s time for those wiley loose lugnuts that have been pinging around my brain this week like lugnuts in a pit box after a green flag pit stop- and we saw lots of those green flag pit stops in Atlanta didn’t we? So let’s get right to it:

1. By the time this publishes I will be driving somewhere along the 500 miles between my house and Las Vegas.  Okay so I lied- I decided to publish this post a little early so I didn’t have to worry about it tomorrow as I am driving (it’s a long drive and you would be surprised what kind of things pop into my brain as I am driving long distances).  You can still expect two things from me: 1.  Posting here on badgroove will be light until a little after I get back and get into the swing of everything. 2. You can follow my Las Vegas adventures on my social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) which always gets very busy/active during a race weekend. Feel free to follow along on any of those channels but know that none of these feeds are not 100% race related. Also note that sometimes I cross post things to the different accounts- but also sometimes I forget to cross post!  You can also follow my co-blogger (and BFF) Misty on her twitter feed as she will be at the race as well. I am hoping that late lugnuts are better than no lugnuts this week but between the Ford announcement and the day job and a puppy that demands my attention when I get home because she is currently going through a very mischievous stage right now I had to delay the lugnuts post!  Here is what has been pinging around my head this week like lugnuts in a pitbox during a green flag pitstop:

1. Biggest thing this week was the Stewart-Haas manufacturer switch announcement that seemed to take everyone by surprise which is interesting to me because usually when something happens there always seems to be rumblings about it on social media. This literally WAS the biggest secret in NASCAR in a while.  Well until it wasn’t a secret any more.  I already had my say about the switch here. BUT I did want to share some additional information that I didn’t know at the time of that writing- and that is that for those who are upset about Tony affiliating his team with Ford for 2017- Tony HAS driven a Ford himself in competition before- just not NASCAR. You can read more about that here in an article from National Speed Sport News.

2. Also for those interested in the teleconference Stewart-Haas had following the initial online announcement I have two resources for you. First is an audio of highlights of the press conference as posted by SiriusXM NASCAR with Tony Stewart. And second I found a transcript of the press conference now too that you can find here as posted by Autoweek.  (more…)

How about a pre-season Loose Lugnuts to get the juices flowing. This seemed to be one of my most popular weekly features last year so I will definitely be bringing it back this season. Especially since it was also one of my favorites to write.  So how about we go over some of the things that have been rolling around my brain like lugnuts rolling around a drawer in a pitbox (you know since they aren’t flying around pitstalls quite yet): (more…)

So- I usually write the “Loose Lugnuts posts” in what is a mostly stream of conscious session on Wednesday night and schedule them to publish on Thursday morning or afternoon- but here it is Monday evening and I am getting a jump start on it because I am going to be traveling and won’t have time to write it up on Wednesday night so I am going to schedule a few while I am gone. Also I realized that I forgot to mention a couple of things in my race report on Monday that I totally spaced on- but will do just fine here. So without further ado here is what has been rolling around my brain like lugnuts rolling around a pitstall after a green flag pit stop during the championship race:

1. Because of the lengthy rain delay in Phoenix- my dad didn’t get to see the F35 flyover that he was so looking forward to watching. While it is not the first flyover the elusive F35 Lightning II has done at a sporting event- it is the first ever at a NASCAR event and my dad is an aviation fan.  He was bummed out. I know the flyover happened (Thanks to someone I follow on Instagram) but you would think that since one of the two jets was carrying a Jeff Gordon Raceway flag you would thank they would have made a bigger hoopla out of it.

2. I watched a heck of a lot of the rain delay coverage that came out of Phoenix last weekend. More than I probably should have. But one thing I didn’t hear mentioned was who Elijah Aschbrenner was and why his name was above the passenger door on Martin Truex Jr’s car at the track. As a matter of fact very little was mentioned about it at all and I think that is a shame.  Elijah was a pediatric cancer patient that was not just part of Martin and Sherry’s Catwalk for a Cause fashion show that raised money for pediatric cancer but he was known and wished well by many many many NASCAR fans and teams. Other drivers such as Kasey Kahne ran special yellow ribbons with Elijah’s likeness on them on their cars during the race as well.  Elijah fought Epitheliod Sarcoma like a hero but earned his angel wings on November 10th.  Here is a wonderful story about Elijah that NASCAR’s Holly Cain did it’s just a shame that they didn’t mention him (or mention him more) during the hours and hours of rain delay coverage.

3. While we are on the topic Martin Truex Jr.’s long time girlfriend Sherry Pollax is battling stage III ovarian cancer as many of you know. She is currently going through once a month maintenance chemo for it.  Well her Chemo session was Monday morning (today).  I can only imagine that she must have been tired- having been in Phoenix so late between it being delayed until all hours, and then I am sure Martin had to do a lot more media than normal after the race considering he made the Final Four.  Go Sherry! Well here is the latest tidbits that have been bouncing around my head like a lugnut on a green flag pit stop this week:

1. In case you missed it- The bricks and mortar Tony Stewart Store in Indianapolis (5644 W. 74th St, Indianapolis, IN 46278) will be closing its doors on December 18th, 2015- so if you are in the area you might want to visit one last time and stock up on some goodies while you are there.  The online store (TonyStewartStore.com) will still be operational for your Tony Stewart, TSR, Eldora and Smoke Racing merchandising needs. They will be relocating the warehouse and offices sometime early next year. They have also mentioned that they may have weekends when they will open their new warehouse location during special races (Indy 500, Brickyard 400, Christmas etc) next year,  so if you don’t “like” the Tony Stewart Official Store yet on facebook you might want to give them a like so you can stay up-to-date (they also post all their sales there and pictures of Tony and stuff so it’s a good FaceBook page to make sure you LIKE).

2. Don’t forget that The Tony Stewart Foundation is doing it’s annual Toy drive: You can donate online ($1, $5, $10, or $20). Or if you want to contribute a specific toy you can bring (or send) the toy to: Tony Stewart Foundation, 2015 Toy Drive, 5644 West 74th Street, Indianapolis IN 46278.

3. Tony Stewart has a “legit pig in a blanket” and how adorable is that: (more…)

1a. So Matt Kenseth was suspended for two races and put on probation for 6 months (a decision that was upheld by the appeals board I might add but the final appeal is still underway).  As I mentioned I really think that Matt deserved no more than a slap on the wrist because Joey had it coming to him. But suspending Matt for what I can only assume is actions detrimental to stock car racing- is just NASCAR showing how inconsistent they are with their “penalties.” What am I talking about? Well Danica Patrick and David Gilliland have been taking turns turning each other all season (actually according to this article their issues have been going on since 2013) and Danica is docked points and fined (nothing for Gilliland). Why was she not suspended? Oh because Gilliland wasn’t in the running for a championship?  And what about the whole Carl Edwards/Brad Keselowski deal from several years ago (2009/2010 here is a video I found on youtube of some of the instances I am thinking about). NASCAR did nothing in these instances.  NASCAR and certain media members make it seem like retaliation never happens ever in this sport. I call foul on their “this is unprecedented” mindset.  So what Matt was laps down when he made contact- I really don’t see why that matters? I still ascertain that Joey Logano KNEW Matt Kenseth wasn’t the happiest of campers with him after Kansas.  Matt chose not to retaliate at Dega which was actually a smart move- that I might have had issues with because that would have been dangerous on so many levels. I still say that this is a veteran driver standing up for himself- saying look you aren’t going to push me around on the track.  It’s very much you get raced how you race others. That’s how it’s always been.

1b. Part of the issue though is this “Chase Elimination format” (which for my regular readers you all know I am already not a fan of). Ricky Craven- whom I almost never agree with- has some interesting things to say about this in regards to this format breeding this mind set (somewhat). I could argue that Joey Logano purposely performed a pit maneuver on Matt Kenseth. Joey was already locked in- Matt Kenseth was fighting for the championship at that moment. Why was Joey not suspended? The penalties do not fit the “crime.” (more…)

Unfortunately it seems that the Lugnuts are rolling around a bit (a lot) slower than normal this week…I don’t know why but I have a feeling it was because I covered too much stuff in my race post that would have normally been good fodder for a Loose Lugnuts post. Anyway- at least the lugnuts are somewhat rolling:

1. By now everyone has seen Tony Stewart’s Halloween costume pretty much everywhere you look…and probably many of the memes that have been streaming in with it. This is my favorite meme thus far:

Via @nascarasm

But what I really want to know about the whole deal? Is did he do his own makeup/false eyelashes? Oh I chortle at the visual.

2. My favorite NASCAR related thing that I have seen this week actually comes from Jeff Gordon.  The story and videos of Loraine- Jeff Gordon fan whom he met at a fanclub (Jeff Gordon Experience) event at Sonoma raceway.  She had him sign the tags to her much beloved 2003 Jeff Gordon Monte Carlo at the event where she told him the car had caught fire and burned up.  Jeff Gordon brought her to a dealership and gifted her his personal JG Monte Carlo- it only has 124 miles on the car.  Here is the video of Jeff presenting Loraine with the car- but you should check out the whole story on the Jeff Gordon website because it has pictures of Loraine’s burned up car right on the side of highway 580 in Northern California:

Is that not an awesome thing of Jeff Gordon to do? Since I live in Cali I will keep my eyes on the road for Loraine- although if I were her- I would only take that sucker out on special occasions! (more…)

Okay there has to be something lucky about edition number 14 of Loose Lugnuts right (fingers crossed)? Let’s get right to the items of the week that have been pinging around my brain like lugnuts in a pitstall during a green flag pit stop, shall we:

1. A lot of you probably saw this already but there is an article that basically is just a lot of classic Tony commercials throughout his career here. It’s missing my two personal favorites though!! My one favorite was this one (sorry for the crappy quality) for the C0ca-Cola Racing family. It’s OLD.  But it is kind of fun to watch because it features both Tony and Kevin Harvick- WAY before they were teammates.   Then there is this one which is my all time favorite commercial of Tony’s (I think a lot of female fans feel the same way- it’s the longish hair I am convinced of it) plus it has a great companion video: the outtakes from a commercial stewn together but it makes me laugh. What are your favorite Tony Stewart ads?

2. It sounds like Stewart-Haas Racing is trying to get together some special sponsors for Tony Stewart’s last year in NASCAR next year. I think that would be great. I would personally love to see some special paint schemes. What I liked most about this article though was the mention of the fans helping honor Tony.

3. Speaking of honoring Tony, I have been trying to get some of my readers to submit stories about their fandom of Tony. I have had one so far that I published here. If you go to this article and scroll towards the bottom there are some examples that a journalist has collected. Anyone have anything they want to share? Shoot me an email at (badgruv@netzero.com) (more…)
