Started: 12th

Finished: 2nd

Points: 287 (28th in the standings, 6 points away from 27th and 67 points away from 31th).

While watching the race in New Hampshire I had only one thing on my mind: points. I wanted nothing more than a decent points day- where we pulled away a bit on 31th (we were 30th in the points at the start of the race). Despite NASCAR’s current points system and the “win and you’re in” mentality that is promoted with it- that is not always the case- especially when it comes to Tony Stewart.  He has his win but Tony has to stay in the top 30 in points and considering he spent the first eight races of the season sidelined with a broken back which also means he was put in an 8 race deficit points wise is no easy task.  Its not impossible as Kyle Busch showed us last season- but it’s not easy either. The team has to fight tooth and nail for every point they can get. (more…)

Tony Qualified: 27th

Tony Finished: 11th!!!

Points: 563 (25th in points standings)

So, qualifying this week wasn’t the best. Tony Stewart didn’t make it past the first round, thus ended up starting the race at New Hampshire 27th, sadly making him the lowest qualifier among the four Stewart-Haas drivers.  After I found out how qualifying went, I told myself Tony doesn’t usually qualify well.  I blamed the fact of it on the fact that the teams were running the original 2015 aero package. All that pep talking to myself (just to clarify I wasn’t really talking to myself- this was all internal in my head) didn’t really lift my hopes up for the race.  I should learn not to trust myself when it comes to these things- because I would say that this ended up being the best race that they have had in awhile. There’s nothing trick or fancy about it. It’s just a fun track. It just seems like it’s always been a fun driver’s track. Your car has to work well there, but when you get to racing guys – you’re trying to out-brake them, trying to get your car to turn and you struggle for forward bite. It’s just got a little bit of everything the drivers look for to have a good race.” — Tony Stewart Pre Race Team Release

I am going to start this post by apologizing right now- obviously my picking Jeff Gordon for the Championship has thwarted him somewhat.  Forgive me Jeff Gordon, team 24 and all your fans.  I promise from this point forward to root for Joey Logano (ok not really) as 2014 Sprint Cup champion.

Okay now back to business.  Between knowing that Tony had qualified 28th and that he had spun out during the last five minutes of final practice I admit I didn’t think this would be our breakout race of the season.  What I didn’t bargain for was the fact that I was ready to throw Tony’s crew chief under the (proverbial- for some reason I feel that I need to clarify this) bus by the midway point of the race.  As you may know, my beloved readers, I am an eternal optimist when it comes to team 14.  I am the one always saying, “Well, we’ll get ‘em next week.” (more…)
