(For those not aware- a little over a year ago I undertook a project here on BadGroove that we lovingly called Project Smoke In My Eyes.  The concept started out as a way for fans to submit their own stories about Tony Stewart and ended up being put into a book that is currently on it’s way to Tony for delivery sometime in December.  The book is pages of fans stories about Tony Stewart. While I was compiling the submissions I worked on creating my own submission for the book.  I went through several versions and finally at the end of my own self-imposed deadline came up with the following. It appears as the last entry in the Smoke In My Eyes book- the only thing behind it being The End- But Really Just The Beginning.—- AMY)

This is what seems like my one millionth attempt at writing my own entry for “Smoke In My Eyes.” My most recent previous attempt was pages and pages of me waxing on poetically but as I edited it, I realized that while it said a lot- it wasn’t actually what I wanted to say.

Mostly what I want to say is thank you Tony. (more…)

My son Logan who is now 17 has been a Tony fan since about age 4. There was just something about Tony that seemed to draw him. Logan was 5 & we had just bought him a new Tony Stewart shirt. He had to put it on right away. My husband and I were packing the van to get ready to leave in the morning for vacation. Logan had gone to my sister’s house to play with her children. Next thing I know-  she calls me. Logan fell playing baseball and she thought he broke his arm. We took him to the ER and he had broken his elbow and had to have surgery. He was very upset when they said they had to cut his shirt off . We explained it was brand new, that Tony was his favorite and so on. They asked the surgical team if they could take it off him once he was out and they said no. The two nurses felt really bad and the one suggested making a pillow or wall hanging. They were very careful cutting it off. Several months later Logan’s great Aunt Ruthie made him a beautiful pillow that he still had. It is worn and has seen it’s better days but it still bring him comfort. Tony is still his favorite driver and he has had a lot of Tony’s t-shirts since that one but the t-shirt pillow is still his favorite!

The side of Tony that I relate to most and admire most is the man himself, away from the track.  Its in the way he looks at a child, they way he stoops down to be at their level when he talks to them.  Its the pure love that I see as both of their hearts melt into one touching moment in time.  Its the Tony who loves and relates animals.  Its the Tony who always jumps into to help another at the drop of a hat, never asking what is in it for him.

NASCAR has given him a platform and a voice that has enabled him to reach out through the Tony Stewart Foundation to really support those who need it most.

The passion that he puts into Eldora Speedway is awe-inspiring.  To see him out prepping the track late at night shows his dedication to the racers and the fans to make sure they get the best experience possible.

To see Tony dressed for Halloween with a bowl of fruit atop is head, in a dress, is priceless and shows his amazing sense of humor.  And, I will never forget him snuggling with a pig in a blanket!  Pork chop cannot be the softest thing I can think of to snuggle with, though he is rather handsome.

Tony makes me laugh when I least expect it.  He is an inspiration and just an amazing regular guy, who also happens to be an amazing racer with one great big heart.

These are just a few glimpses of the Tony that I admire the most.  I cannot wait to see what he is up to next.

How about a pre-season Loose Lugnuts to get the juices flowing. This seemed to be one of my most popular weekly features last year so I will definitely be bringing it back this season. Especially since it was also one of my favorites to write.  So how about we go over some of the things that have been rolling around my brain like lugnuts rolling around a drawer in a pitbox (you know since they aren’t flying around pitstalls quite yet): (more…)
