I just wanted to alert you to two fabulous opportunities you have to interact with NASCAR drivers next week ONLINE!

First one is on July 10th on Facebook. Fans have the chance to interact with NASCAR legend Richard Petty and his driver Aric Almirola.  Aric will host a Facebook chat with King Richard Petty live on Wednesday July 10th at 3:00 PM (EDT) on the STP Facebook page.

And STOP THE PRESSES- Tony Stewart (our favorite driver and beloved twitter-aphobe that we all know and love) will be doing a TWITTER CHAT!  From what I can tell it looks like he will be taking over the Indianapolis MotorSpeedway twitter account (@IMS) at some point on July 11th. There wasn’t a time listed- but you can start asking questions to him now using #SuperWeekend.

Richard Petty, simply known as The King to most NASCAR fans, will be honored at the STP 400 this weekend at Kansas Speedway.  This year is the 40th anniversary of the partnership between STP and Richard Petty.  The number 43 car will be running the iconic paint scheme this weekend.

To honor the King will be honored will be by a $43,000 donation to The Victory Junction Gang Camp by STP’s parent company Armored AutoGroup.  As many fans know- The Victory Junction Gang Camp was created in honor of Richard Petty’s grandson, Adam Petty who died in a racing accident.  I have talked about Victory Junction lots- it’s a wonderful children’s summer camp that serves more than 2,500 campers each year, between the ages of six and16 years old with 24 chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses, in Randleman, NC for a week of non-stop, full-throttle fun.

After the race in Kansas,STP in conjunction with Victory Junction and Richard Petty Motorsports, will auction
off Aric Almirola’s race-worn firesuit signed by both Almirola and Petty. The car Aric will be driving will bear the classic Petty Blue/STP Red paint scheme that Richard made famous.  All proceeds from this one-of-a-kind firesuit will benefit Victory Junction. Fans can visit http://myworld.ebay.com/victoryjunction to bid on the firesuit – a one of a kind item that will be a great addition to the collection of any race fan.

Also, in honor of Richard Petty, STP is providing race-day tickets to Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth service members, allowing them to take in all the racing action this weekend at Kansas Speedway as a thank you for their service!

Also watch for a new commerical campaign staring none other than Richard Petty himself.  Entitled Left Lane Club, the STP campaign will start this weekend on FOX and will also air throughout the summer.  So keep an eye open for that. And congratulations Richard Petty and STP on 40 years!

When most NASCAR fans think of STP one thing comes to mind- Richard Petty and the classic blue and red petty paint scheme on the 43.  It is arguably one of the most iconic and longstanding sponsorship relationships in NASCAR. And Richard Petty’s 200 wins in this paint scheme didn’t hurt that relationship.

This year Richard Petty Motorsports driver AJ Allmendinger will sit behind the wheel of the 43 STP Sponsored Ford Fusion carrying a modern replica of the 1972 paint scheme featuring the original Petty Blue and STP Day-Glo Red colors but he won’t be running it at just any race. He will be piloting the STP Ford Fusion at STP 400 to be run at Kansas Speedway on June 5th.

Other racing endeavors of STP include:

  • Primary sponsor of two-time NHRA Full Throttle Nitro Funny Car Champion Tony Pedregon for three races (Las Vegas, Houston and Infineon) and an associate sponsorship for the balance of the season.
  • Multi-year track sponsorships with a number of ISC properties including Daytona, Talladega, Richmond, Darlington, Michigan, Chicagoland and Kansas.
  • Multi-year track sponsorship of Infineon Raceway and title sponsor of Wednesday Night Drags and Bracket Drags.
  • Continued sponsorship of Tony Stewart Racing and four-time World of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz and the World of Outlaws Series.

A whole new generation will be exposed to the iconic status STP has in not just NASCAR but in other racing series as well.

Starting today, through midnight (ET) on March 17th, NASCAR fans have the chance to help pick the paint scheme of two special cars that will be showcased in the pre-race show for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 run on April 3rd, 2011.

As part of the Pick A Powder campaign rivalry between Richard Petty (representing Goody’s and The Victory Junction Gang) and Trace Adkins (representing BC and The Wounded Warriors Project),  two sets of cars (two cars for the Victory Junction Gang Camp and two for Wounded Warriors Project) were designed by representatives chosen by the charities with the help of accomplished NASCAR artist Sam Bass.

The Victory Junction Gang Camp cars were created by Eleanor Bolton, a Victory Junction Gang camper and second grader from Davidson, North Carolina. She is eight years of age and has a medical condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a motor neuron disease that affects the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. These are her designs:

The Wounded Warrior Project cars were created by Cory Collins who was wounded 27 days into his first tour of duty in Iraq in 2005 when the truck he was in ran over a 500 lb IED.  Collins was the only survivor in his truck.  He spent five years going through surgeries and treatments trying to mend 30 broken or shattered bones, he ended up having to have his leg amputated  in 2010.  Within 34 days, Collins was walking again with the assistance of a prosthetic leg. NASCAR fans can vote for their favorite paint scheme for each car by going to either the facebook page for Goody’s or the Facebook Page for BC. Like the page and click on the PICK A PAINT SCHEME link. You can then vote for one of the Victory Junction Paint schemes and one of the Wounded Warriors paint schemes.

You will then get to check out which cars won on the pre-race show at Martinsville Speedway on April 3rd.

Fans who live in areas where Goody’s and BC Powders are sold (they aren’t sold here on the west coast), fans have yet another way to support both charities. Adkins and Wounded Warrior Project are currently featured on specially-marked boxes of BC, and Petty and Victory Junction on select boxes of Goody’s. With each purchase made until March 31 of the BC and Goody’s specially-marked boxes, fans will help to give back to the organization affiliated with each brand.

Viewership may be down, attendance may be down, but does NASCAR really think changing the rules of the game AGAIN is going to magically cure that?  Seems that NASCAR’s answer to all that ails it is to change, change and change things.  Apparently they have never heard Einstein’s definition of insanity:  doing the same thing over and expecting different results.  Well, in this case doing the same thing is changing the sport AGAIN.  Can we not just go from one season to another without wholesale changes like this?

Some may not think that the change that has been hinted at is that big of a deal, and may even see the potential change as easier to understand, but as a diehard NASCAR  fan I don’t have any issue or problem understanding the current scoring method.  Most of us can indeed count past 43.  I view the changes as yet one more thing to figure out as the season starts.  It distracts from the racing, it distracts from the good part of the sport and frustrates me to no end.

I am also not in favor of changing the Chase format.  Why, you may ask?  Because in my opinion the integrity of the record books has already been compromised by instituting the Chase in the first place.  There is Pre-Chase Era drivers and Championships and Chase Era drivers and Championships, NASCAR doesn’t need a third era.  You simply cannot compare Richard Petty’s seven Championships to Jeff Gordon’s four because had the Chase format not been instituted Gordon would have won two additional Championships (2004 and 2007).  Carl Edwards would have taken the 2008 Championship, and Jimmie wouldn’t be Mr. Five Time.  As it stands there needs to be an asterisk in the books, but the damage is done, let’s move on and leave it be.

If the Chase were eliminated now or God forbid, a whole other format instituted, we will never be able to compare Championship results or have a history of the sport that makes any kind of sense.  And to answer those that say, “yeah but Johnson winning all the time is boring and he has this Chase thing figured out”, I say to you, yes indeed it is and he does, but guess what like him or hate him, he has been the best in this format for the last five seasons and it is the burden of the other drivers to rise to the standard set by Johnson the 48 Team.   The other 11 teams need to bring it to the track week after week and get it done.  If at the end of the season, Johnson is crowned Champion again,   then we know the other drivers failed.  Simply changing the sport in an attempt to handicap a winner or level a playing field is ridiculous.  If the others aren’t up to the challenge then they don’t deserve to win.  Hamlin and Harvick came close this year proving the Chase format is not broken.

Confusion is never a good marketing strategy and changing the rules constantly is not going to draw more fans in, but it could frustrate current fans and cause them to move on to a sport they don’t have to re-learn each season.  NASCAR, please, leave the drama to the drivers on the track and let the rest ride!
