“It’s trial and error, but at the same time, it’s like pulling a pin on a grenade. You know through that process that if one guy makes a mistake, your car’s torn up. It’s just a delicate balance of how hard you go, how many things you try, and how much time you spend doing it.” Tony Stewart- pre-spring Talladega team release

Okay- the square pupils in this picture freak me out a tad...

“When things are tough, the pressure and the burden is more on you knowing that you’re responsible for everything versus just being the guy driving the car. It’s hard, but it’s also what makes it more gratifying when things go right, and that’s what we’re getting to enjoy right now.”Tony Stewart, Spring Richmond 2014 Pre-Race Release.

“As much as we know about the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I think people underestimate how much we know about Darlington and the history of that track, and how hard it is to win races there. I guess that’s why a Sprint Cup win at Darlington is something that’s really important to me.” Tony Stewart- when asked if open-wheel drivers respect the history of Darlington in the SHR Pre-Race release.

“One thing about Martinsville is there is no lack of excitement. I don’t care how flawlessly your day goes, you’re going to bump into somebody at some point, even on a perfect day. You put 43 cars on this half-mile track and it’s always going to be exciting. You will never have a race there where you don’t have some sort of drama during the day. I think every driver will say they will have some drama at some point. When you have 43 drivers with 43 dramatic moments, that’s a lot of action going on.” — Tony Stewart, 2014 Martinsville Team Release

Regarding racing at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA:

“Regardless of what everyone else is doing, you can find a way to help yourself out. It makes you feel good knowing that because the place is so wide, you can move around, and basically, earn your money that day. As far as when to start trying the different grooves, really from the drop of the green flag, you do it from there on out because what works for one part of the race may not work at another point. Basically, it’s as soon as you feel like you’re not where you need to be. If you feel like you’re slower than the pace you need to be running, you’re going to move up the racetrack and find a place that helps balance your racecar.”— Tony Stewart, Team Release. (more…)

Tony saunters through the garage at Bristol

“People that want to compete, want to compete. They fight through injuries, they persevere, they work hard to get back where they want to be, and this is no different. There’s nothing about this process that has taken away my desire to do what I want to do. You don’t live for what could happen, you live for what you can make happen.” Tony Stewart, SHR Bristol Advance.

TQMS (which stands for The Quotable Mr. Stewart) will be a new weekly feature here on BadGroove for Saturday morning. Usually the quotes will come from that weeks team advance or media presser for that week (as is the case this week)- just something that for some reason caught my eye. This week I am going to start with TWO quotes- one from the Team race advance and one from his media session:

“I think I’ m pretty tough, honestly. Every injury is different for everybody. No two people have exactly the same injuries, and I’ve never had anything like this happen, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. The confidence you get from it is from your surgeon and from your therapist, and they’re saying, “Wow, we can’t believe how good this looks or how good you’re feeling or how good of progress you’re making. I’ve got guys that shoot me straight. They’re not just saying these things to motivate me. They’re just saying we didn’t expect you to be able to do this at this time. Being able to have those personal gains and victories keeps us pretty motivated.” — Tony Stewart, Spring 2014 Phoenix Race Advance.

“I’ll be honest, I’ll be more happy when everybody quits asking me how I feel.  I’m not 100 percent.  I’m not going to be 100 percent for a while.  It was fine.  There wasn’t any drama, same as we said for the shootout, same as we said for the qualifying race and same as we said after the (Daytona) 500.  I appreciate everybody checking on me, but it’s not going to change in a week.  It wasn’t a big drama, everything is fine.  Everything is fine in the car this week so far.  Hopefully, we will be able to talk a year from now about how far we have come.”  — Tony Stewart, Spring 2014 Phoenix Press Conference
